The number of teams in the tournament grew from 16 to 20, featuring the two hosting nations, the top eight teams from the previous year's event, the highest ranked two teams in the ICC Men's T20I Team Rankings who hadn't yet qualified, and eight additional teams chosen through regional qualifying rounds. Canada and Uganda earned their first appearance in the men's T20 World Cup, while the United States made its debut in the tournament as co-hosts.
Host selection
In November 2021, the International Cricket Council (ICC) declared that the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup would take place in the United States and the West Indies. A combined proposal was put forward by Cricket West Indies and USA Cricket after a period of two years of planning, as part of a strategic alliance between the two organizations.
The involvement of USA Cricket in co-hosting was a step towards fostering and advancing cricket within the United States, a country where the sport's biggest supporters are predominantly from South Asian backgrounds. Before this World Cup, the United States had sometimes welcomed West Indies home games at Central Broward Park in Florida, and a Twenty20 franchise league called Major League Cricket was established in 2023.
Even though cricket hasn't achieved widespread popularity in the nation, the United States is linked to several significant milestones in the game's early days. This includes being the site of the first international cricket game, and American cricketer Bart King being recognized for creating the method of swing bowling.
Schedule
On July 28, 2023, the ICC declared that the competition would be held from April 4 to June 30, 2024. The participating teams will engage in 55 games, with three cities in the United States set to host 12 of these matches, while the remaining games will be played at six different locations in the Caribbean. On May 16, 2024, the ICC announced that practice matches will be conducted from May 27 to June 1.
